Why are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?
If you want to avoid expensive, time-consuming restorative treatment, unnecessary discomfort, and worsening oral health problems, you should maintain your regular dental checkups and cleanings. These visits are designed to minimize your risk of common issues affecting your smile, many of which can develop into serious complications throughout your body.
Dr. Sanchez and the American Dental Association recommend dental cleanings and exams every six months (biannually) to detect damage, decay, or abnormalities early.
What to Expect During a Dental Checkup
When meeting with your dentist in New York City for a dental checkup, you can expect the following steps to occur:
- Update Medical History: When you arrive, you will be asked to review your medical history and update any information, including any medications you are currently taking.
- Digital Imaging: Your dental team will escort you to a treatment room and take necessary digital X-rays and images before you see Dr. Sanchez. This will provide a comprehensive view of your oral anatomy above and below the gumline.
- Oral Examination: We will check your mouth for any indications of dental decay, gum disease, bite misalignment, worn restorations, etc.
- Oral Cancer Screening: Sanchez will look at your mouth, soft oral tissues, neck, and throat to determine if any abnormalities (i.e., lumps, discolored tissues, etc.) exist that might indicate oral cancer.
- Treatment Planning: If we find a problem that needs further attention, we will develop a treatment plan that details what kind of restorative care is required to improve your oral health.
- Question & Answer: If you have questions or concerns about anything you learned during your appointment, you can freely ask them.
What to Expect During a Dental Cleaning
After completing the oral examination phase of your visit, you will then have your teeth professionally cleaned. This includes a dental hygienist using specialized instruments to remove hardened plaque and tartar from your teeth and around the gumline, flossing between your teeth to remove bacteria and food debris, and polishing your pearly whites to leave them shining bright.
We’ll also discuss ways to improve your oral habits at home so that your smile looks its best between appointments.
